How buying online works in Orlando
Federal law doesn’t allow a store to mail a firearm to your house, so every gun sold online goes to a federally licensed dealer (an FFL) first. You choose that dealer. Orlando has plenty of them: gun counters, gunsmiths and home-based FFLs that do transfers for a fee.
- Order here. Add the gun to your cart and check out by card. In the FFL field, give us the dealer’s name and city, for example “[dealer name], Winter Park”. If you haven’t picked one yet, email us after you order.
- We ship to the dealer. We confirm the dealer’s license and ship the gun to them. You get tracking by email.
- Visit the counter. Bring a valid photo ID. You fill in ATF Form 4473, and the dealer runs the background check through the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE).
- Take it home. Once the check clears and any waiting period is over, the gun is yours.
The Florida rules that apply
These are the points most Orlando buyers ask about. Laws change, and your dealer applies the current rules at the counter, so treat this as a guide, not legal advice.
- Age: you must be 21 or older to buy any firearm from a licensed dealer in Florida.
- Waiting period: Florida sets a 3-day wait, not counting weekends and legal holidays, before a dealer can hand over a firearm. Holders of a Florida concealed weapon license (CWL) are exempt. Counties can have their own rules, and your dealer will tell you if one applies.
- Background check: Florida runs its own checks through FDLE rather than sending buyers straight to the federal NICS system.
- Carry: since July 1, 2023, an adult who meets the requirements for a Florida CWL can carry a concealed handgun without one. Carry is still restricted in places such as schools, courthouses and the secure areas of Orlando International Airport.
- Private sales: buying through a store always involves a dealer and a background check. That’s the point of the transfer.
Choosing an FFL in the Orlando area
Pick a dealer that is easy for you to get to during their opening hours. Before you order, call them and ask two questions:
- What is your transfer fee? Most Central Florida dealers charge a flat fee per firearm. It is paid to them at pickup, not to us.
- Do you accept transfers from online stores? Nearly all do, but a few only transfer guns they sell themselves.
Then put the dealer’s name and city in the checkout form. If you are in Kissimmee, Sanford, Clermont or anywhere else in Central Florida, the process is the same. Just pick a dealer near you.
NFA items: SBRs and suppressed platforms
Florida allows NFA items such as short-barreled rifles and suppressors. They go through the same dealer transfer, with one extra step: an ATF Form 4 is filed for you (individually or through a trust), and the dealer can release the item once ATF approves it. Parts, optics and accessories ship to your door
